Abstract

Evaluation and exploitation of local genetic heritage by getting new biological creations from this species was a major priority for the Laboratory of Genetics and Breeding of the Unit. Germplasm base accumulated along with logistical and human potential have enabled the commencement of intensive research since 1996. This species, due to the genetic characteristics and alogamy, has a broad potentiall of phenotypic expression and many of these phenotypic features have not been valued so far. Research goal: achieving a solid germplasm base; an evaluation of germplasm and systematization of data in electronic format; getting new parental lines. (Fig.1.) After the evaluation of germplasm base, 14 parental lines have passed the test of general and specific combinative capacity. They have entered into a program of severe selection and have been autopollinated for 6 generations. In order to avoid impurification of the lines were used pollen insulators.
