Abstract

Experiments on granular filtration of gas-solid suspensions were conducted to determine the changes in particle collection efficiency and pressure drop necessary to maintain a given gas flow rate as a filter becomes clogged with deposited particles. Based on the data obtained, together with similar data collected previously [Takahashi, T., Walata, S. A. and Tien, C. (1986) AIChE J. 32, 684–690], empirical correlations were established relating the increase in collection efficiency and pressure gradient with the extent of deposition and other relevant variables. Examples demonstrating the use of these correlations in predicting the transient behavior of granular filtration are presented.
