Abstract

During World War II the Boston Navy Yard made significant contributions to the war effort. This yard produced record numbers of ships and craft considered vital for the support of our armed forces. Simultaneously the Yard accomplished repairs and completed alterations on large numbers of active ships so they could return to sea. Several ships were assigned to the Yard for major conversions. These accomplishments become more impressive when one recognizes the severe limitations in work area and basic and essential shipbuilding facilities that the shipyard's forces had to overcome.
