Abstract

Some new polymeric composites exemplified by polyethylene or polystyrene filled with precious metal particles, especially with spherical palladium, silver and gold powders, of various diameters are discussed. In addition to bulk samples, thick films are prepared and studied. The determined critical parameters describing resistivity-content dependence are strongly influenced both by the polymer and by the shape and conductive particle dimensions. The percolation threshold varies from about 10 to 31 vol.%. All the composites exhibit a large positive temperature coefficient of resistance in a wide temperature range. Dielectric measurements show also a strong temperature dependence of capacitance up to the melting point. The results are compared with those obtained on polymers filled with carbon black of various types.
