New Concepts Lower Deep Water Drilling Costs

Abstract

Abstract Texaco Exploration and Production Inc. recently drilled a deep water location in Green Canyon 506 (Gulf of Mexico) with the Sonat Discoverer 534 drill ship. The well was drilled to below 21,000 ft measured depth in only 80 days. TEPI developed a simple well head system for containing shallow water flow zones. Underreaming and drilling was accomplished simultaneously which allowed the drilling time to be greatly reduced. A "thin is best" approach was used on the drilling fluid to promote solids removal efficiency. A unique incentive plan involving the contractor and key service providers was used to motivate rig employees.
