Abstract

Resistance to organophosphorus (OP) insecticides by populations of the tobacco budworm, Heliothis virescens (F.), has been reported in certain areas of North America (Wolfenbarger and McGarr 1970, Wolfenbarger et al. 1973). Although OP insecticides are still effective against this insect in the southeastern United States and in Colombia, South America (Wolfenbarger et al. 1973), it would become a much more serious problem in the event these populations dispersed to all portions of North, Central, and South America. These determinations of resistance delineate the need for discovery of new classes of compounds that will be effective against this insect.
