Abstract

This name is needed because the abnormal form of the species with distorted lower internodes-'Kikkochiku'-was the first to be formally named, as Bambusa heterocycla by Carriere in Revue Horticole 49: 354 (1878). Until the abolition of Article 71 of the International Code disqualifying names given to monstrosities, the correct name for the species was Ph. pubescens, published 28 years later for the normal form with normal internodes. This latter, however, still needs to be distinguished, and the most appropriate way to do this seems to be to give it the rank offorma.
