Abstract

The rise in R, the ratio of the hadronic and muonic cross sections in e+e- annihilation, is interpreted in terms of quarks with new colour quantum numbers, as well as the production of charmed meson and heavy lepton pairs. The successful features of the SU(3) colour scheme are retained if the colour group is SU(4) broken, in a gauge theory to SU(3) by a vector representation of Higgs' bosons. Requiring the SU(3) colour singlets in the model to be integrally charged means that the new colours of quark must themselves be integrally charged. Shows how to accommodate this within an SU(2)*U(1) gauge theory of the weak and electromagnetic interactions while keeping conventional fractional charges for the old colours. Discusses how hadrons containing new quarks might manifest themselves.
