Abstract

After the discoveries of the initial classes of antibiotics in the mid-twentieth century, approximately 40 years passed before a new antibiotic class was discovered. With the rising number of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the twenty-first century, novel classes of antibiotics and innovative mechanisms of antibiotic delivery have been invented.
