Abstract

This book contains the proceedings of the symposium, "Artificial Intelligence Applications in Materials Science." The book contains a collection of 13 papers presented at the symposium. The papers presented show that there is a broad application of AI to the materials science domain. The reader will find that many of the papers deal with descriptions of expert systems that are being developed or proposed for certain tasks, such as failure analysis, manufacturing, alloy design, casting, etc. Issues raised include problems of knowledge representations, knowledge reasoning, scope and how expert systems need to be designed to support the retrieval of information from external sources.
