Abstract

The UK's leading funding agency for nonmedical life sciences research, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) has announced that Julia Goodfellow is its new Chief Executive. Goodfellow, currently vice-master and head of the School of Crystallography at Birkbeck College, University of London, will take charge of the BBSRC £250m budget in January 2002. She becomes the first female head of a UK Research Council, a move welcomed by those campaigning for increased opportunities for women in science. The appointment continues the trend of women achieving the top positions in science. Earlier this year, the Royal Society announced the appointment of Professor Dame Julia Higgins as Foreign Secretary – only the second time that a woman will have been elected as an officer of the Royal Society since its foundation in 1660. In addition, the EMBL recently appointed Janet Thornton and Nadia Rosenthal as the new heads of its European Bioinformatics and Monterotondo outstations. D.S.
