Abstract

A simple and reliable method is introduced to evaluate liquefaction disturbances of human ejaculates. By means of a disposable plastic hook, an attempt is made to draw threads out of the ejaculate. If this is still possible 20 minutes or more after ejaculation, a liquefaction disturbance is diagnosed. The therapeutic usefulness of this method has been investigated in a clinical study. Forty patients of the Andrological Department of the University Hospital for Gynecology and Obstetrics in Graz were treated with Ichthyol preparations: 20 patients had sitz bath therapy with Ichthobath three times a week for six weeks, and 20 patients used Ichtopur suppositories twice daily for six weeks. In both treatment groups a significant decrease in liquefaction time occurred, and four pregnancies resulted. The new diagnostic method and the encouraging results after treatment with Ichthyol enhance the therapeutic possibilities for the andrologist in the complex field of seminal liquefaction disturbances.
