Abstract

Colby College in Waterville, Maine opened its new Art and Music Center with an Inaugural Exhibition on October 18. At that time the Center was dedicated to Colby's retiring president, Dr. J. Seelye Bixler. Included in the exhibition were more than two hundred items from the college's permanent collection or on extended loan. Recent gifts accounted for the greater part of this total, and these came as a result of the efforts of the Friends of Art at Colby, an organization formed last spring to improve and enlarge the permanent collection at Colby. Notable among the acquisitions is a large bronze by William Zorach entitled Mother and Child which has been placed outdoors in the Montague Sculpture Court adjacent to the gallery. Other sculptures recently acquired are works by Chaim Gross, Lewis Iselin and Sidney Simon. Prints by Adolf Dehn, Lawrence Beall Smith, Clare Leighton, paintings by Karl Zerbe, Philip Elliott, Milton Avery and Kenneth Callahan have been donated within the last year.
