Abstract

This issue of the journal was dedicated by the editors to a study of the fundamental and applied problems of highly excited states in solids. This lead-off paper consists of a comprehensive and in-depth review each of the five remaining articles contained in the issue. Those articles discuss these topics: strongly excited states in crystals, the spectrum of excited states and the rotational mechanical field in a deformed crystal, the modification of the properties of metals by high power ion beams, the anomalous Hall effect in disordered magnetic alloys of the transition metals, and the restructuring of the atomic condensed state under conditions of an intense external field. Superconductivity and quantum crystal theory are addressed along with thermodynamics and phase transformations.
