Abstract
Aim: Aim of the present study is to indicate the link between chronic otomastoiditis (COM) and mastoid size and asymmetry Material and Methods: 1870 patients who underwent computed tomography (CT) imaging for variorus indications were retrospectively evaluated. Of the 1870 patients 67 were included in this study. Coronal and sagittal images of 67 patients were evaluated and 3D reconstructed. Results: There was no significant difference between right and left sides with respect to age and gender.(p>0,05).VLBM (verti, cal lenght difference between tips of mastoids) was significant in patients with left hypopneumatized mastoid. (p<0,001). No significant correlation was found between COM and VLBM. No correlation between VLBM and age was found as well. (r= -0,012 p=0,926). Conclusion: It seems that the development of mastoid pneumatization is not influenced by COM. Results of our study are in concordance with those of studies which indicate that mastoid pneumatization is mainly genetically determined.
