Abstract

To replace the current Pt/C catalyst with low- or non-PGM materials represents a critical technology challenge for commercialization of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell. To compete with the precious metal based catalyst, the non-PGM material must have higher active site density and improved turn-over-frequency. In this report, we discuss a new method of preparing “support-free” non-PGM catalysts produced by using the transition metal decorated porous organic polymers as precursors. The new approach has led to formation of catalysts with high efficiency towards the oxygen reduction reaction, tested in the oxygen saturated acidic electrolyte and under actual fuel cell operating condition.
