This book won the University Press of Kentucky's "Appalachian Award" as the outstanding manuscript submitted in 1985 dealing with the mountain region. It examines three rural communities in Western North Carolina over a ten-year period focusing on community reaction to the floods of 1977, sex roles, and relationships with outsiders moving into the communities. Niota, Tennessee: Anne Burn, 1986, unstated reprint of a 1984 release from the Memphis State University Press of Memphis, Tennessee. 130 pages with an index and bibliography, illustrated with photographs. Hardback issued without a dust jacket: $20.00. An interesting and thorough account of life in this ridge and valley county bordered on the south by the Hiwassee River and lying just to the east of the Tennessee River. Among the fascinating incidents reported is the episode immediately following World War II when disgruntled veterans attacked the city jail where ballot boxes were being stuffed by the courthouse gang.
