Abstract

A new Ponto-Caspian species of the genus Echinogammarus Stebbing, 1899 (Amphipoda: Gammaridae), E. mazestiensis sp. n., is described from the estuary of the Mazesta River, Sochi Area, southwestern Caucasus. The new species can be clearly separated from the related Ponto-Caspian E. ischnus (Stebbing, 1899) and E. trichiatus (Martynov, 1932) by a significantly smaller size of mature specimens and various morphological features. Molecular genetic analysis using the COI mtDNA gene marker (barcoding) confirmed that the new species belongs to the Ponto-Caspian group (= Pontogammaridae s. str.) and is originated from the Ponto-Caspian basin, not being an alien. http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:2C965FC5-4D46-4309-9833-29E162C0E77D
