Abstract

Sceletium tortuosum (Mesembryanthemaceae) has been used as antianxiety, anti-stress, and anti-depression in traditional medicine in South Africa. The psych activity associated with S. tortuosum is considered to be due to the presence of alkaloids. Six tricyclic alkaloids, including two new, were isolated from the methanol extract of the aerial parts of S. tortuosum by chromatographic methods. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic means, including 1D- and 2D-NMR and HRESI-MS.
