Abstract
An analytic equation to describe adsorption of a single gas on an energetically heterogeneous adsorbent is derived. The model assumes that the adsorbent consists of a distribution of energetically different sites and the local isotherm on a site can be described by the Langmuir isotherm. The energy distribution on the surface of the adsorbent is assumed to have a gamma probability density form. The model has three parameters, the saturation capacity, and two distribution parameters. These parameters are related to the Henry's Law constant. Adsorption of CH 4 and CO 2 on various activated carbons at different temperatures and that of N 2 on 10× zeolite were successfully described by the model. These systems were found to be quite heterogeneous. A parametric study of the effect of the adsorbent heterogeneity on the shape of the adsorption isotherms was carried out.
