Abstract

Charlotte Bronte to Mrs Gaskell, I5 November I853 Three and a half-page letter in which Charlotte discusses mutual acquaintances and asks for Elizabeth Gaskell's advice on where to stay in London as she wishes to visit on a 'matter of business (nothing relating to literature or publishing, as I hardly need say but wholly and solely touching my small income)'. The letter ends 'Remember me very kindly to Mr Gaskell to all your dear and happy circle I always think yours a very happy household', a poignant comment in the light of Charlotte's own lonely life at Haworth. (Published in facsimile in BST 12:65:428) Purchased from Bloomsbury Book Auctions. Grant aid was received from the Resource/V&A Purchase Grant Fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
