Abstract

Background: Southern IML is the main private provider of laboratory services in Southern NSW, with collection centres located along the south coast. Due to its large geographical coverage, samples can travel ∼300km to reach the main laboratory for analysis, and this can cause delays in processing of samples. There have been local anecdotal reports of ‘artefactual neutropenia’ thought to be related to this delay. This has never been clearly described in the literature, and we sought to determine if this is a real phenomenon.
