Abstract

The stage 2 CoCl 2 -graphite intercalation compound exhibits two magnetic phase transitions at T Cl (=8.0 K) and T Cu (=9.1 K). We have performed neutron scattering experiments on this compound which revealed at T < T Cl a spin structure in which the 2D ferromagnetic CoCl 2 -sheets are stacked antiferromagnetically along the c -axis with weak 3D correlation. The intermediate phase between T Cl and T Cu is purely 2D in character with ferromagnetic in-plane order.
