Abstract

Neutron scattering is able to provide some information on the structure and dynamics of liquid crystals that is not accessible by other techniques. The aims of this Chapter are to introduce the different neutron scattering techniques and to indicate their strengths and weaknesses with respect to other techniques. We begin with an introduction to the neutron itself since its properties are responsible for its usefulness as a probe of condensed matter. The basic theory of neutron scattering is available in several text books [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] so only the essential background theory for the technique described in this Chapter is given. Some diffraction experiments which emphasise the use of neutrons are discussed but the major part of this Chapter is a discussion of the use of incoherent quasi-elastic neutron scattering from liquid crystals.
