Abstract
The authors describe a method and equipment for the neutron activation analysis of ferromanganese ores for purposes of surveying for these ores in the ocean floor. The neutron activation analyzer is based on a californium 252 spontaneous fission thermal neutron source and uses lithium-drifted germanium detectors for recording prompt gamma radiation spectra induced by the neutrons in the ores. The analyzer can work in a ship-borne laboratory and permits the immediate determination of the elements in the sample. Performance and resolution characteristics are included.
