Abstract

The effects of neutron irradiation on PbO-SiO 2 glasses have been investigated by Raman spectroscopy. PbO-SiO 2 (34.0, 49.6, 66.2 mol% SiO 2) glasses were investigated to an integrated flux of 2 × 10 20 neutrons/ cm 2 ( E > 1 MeV) using the Japan Materials Testing Reactor (JMTR). The effect of neutron irradiation is to selectively break the Si-O bond in a three dimensional network group and a more random or disordered system with small ionic species in SiO 2-rich glasses is produced. Little change in Raman spectra was observed after neutron irradiation in PbO-rich glasses.
