Abstract

The authors have developed a Monte Carlo model of internuclear cascades in a fissionable material, produced by the action of alpha-particles and heavier ions. Inelastic nuclear collisions are calculated on the basis of the mechanism of intranuclear cascades with an allowance for the competing evaporation and fission processes of the excited residual (postcascade) nuclei. In the range of T less than or equal to 1 GeV per nucleon, for oncoming ions that are not excessively heavy, this approach produces results which are in good agreement with experimental data, especially if mean values of the interaction characteristics are considered.
