Abstract

Cathodic reduction of 2H–TaS2 in D2SO4 was investigated by transient neutron powder diffractometry. Deuterium was found to enter the lattice in a regular way. The structural model proposed implies a strong Ta–D bond. Single crystal neutron diffraction data on H0.76NbS2 confirm the position of hydrogen in a three-center metal bond inside the dichalcogenide layers. Structural data are in accordance with inelastic neutron scattering data.
