Abstract

Prompt gamma rays from thermal neutron capture were used as a non-destructive technique for elemental analysis. A beam of thermal neutron of about 10 6 neutrons/cm 2 sec from a pool type nuclear reactor was used to irradiate samples of mixtures of alumina, iron oxide, silica, calcium carbonate, gold and a gold ore. The gamma rays were measured by a germanium-lithium detector connected to a 1024 channels pulse height analyzer. The components could be easily identified and the spectroscopic data was in accord with the concentrations present.
