Abstract The effects of neutrino transport on the shock fronts which are expected to form in the gravitational collapse of a stellar core are studied by directly integrating the shock structure equations. A model fluid in plane-parallel geometry is used, and particular attention is given to the possibility and the conditions under which neutrinos can mediate shock transition. Two dissipation mechanisms are considered: neutrino momentum transport to account for the transport effects of neutrinos across the shock, and the reversible reaction ep yields (nu)(n) to account for the production of additional neutrinos at the shock front. These two mechanisms are found sufficient to mediate shocks of certain strengths.
