Abstract The line of sight structure of the interstellar medium toward epsilon Persei is through the analysis of H I, D I, H2, N I, O I and Ar I absorption features revealed to have a main interstellar cold (100 K) component, a weak and probably cold component, and a hot (8000 K) component. Normal abundances are found in all three components. In addition, comparison with other UV studies reveals an H II region in the line of sight not previously detected among the neutral species observed, and high velocity H I gas is found in either the interstellar medium or the stellar wind for blue-shifted components. These data are compatible with a D/H ratio of 0.000015. One of the H I gas features, which blended with the deuterium lines and obscured the present D/H evaluation, varied by at least a factor of three in a few hours and therefore sustains the interpretation of the stellar wind origin of the blueshifted, high velocity H I component.
