Abstract

The gaseous divertor employs a neutral gas blanket to absorb the plasma heat flux in the divertor chamber. This novel method for resolving the heat loading problem in a conventional divertor system is simulated experimentally. In our operational range ( n e ⩽ 5 × 10 13 cm −3, T e ⩽ 5 eV) it is demonstrated that the localized plasma heat flux is scattered relatively uniformly with neutral pressures of a few microns. At large neutral pressures the plasma stream is neutralized without touching a material wall. Plasma pumping inhibits neutral backflow and can sustain a neutral pressure difference comparable to the plasma pressure. Effective divertor channel conductance is measured to be reduced by a factor of six.
