Abstract

A psychological investigation was conducted into the neurotic features of 28 male and 25 female patients with functional cardiac disorders (effort syndrome). The aim was to determine the proportion of neurotics in a selected group of patients. Significant differences were found in comparison with a control group of neurotics in respect of the present complaints, the symptoms remembered from childhood, the family climate, family consitution, trigger situations and scale 7 of the MMPI. In 42 out of 50 patients, it was possible to delineate the neurotic structure objectively by means of the MMPI. Effort syndrome is thus not a pathogenetic entity. In one fifth of the patients, there was no MMPI evidence of a neurosis. Attention is drawn to the necessity for detecting cardiac neuroses in patients with cardiac disorders, by the appropriate use of psychodiagnostic methods so that they can receive proper treatment.
