Abstract

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a nondegenerative, noncongenital insult to the brain from an external mechanical force, possibly leading to permanent or temporary impairment of cognitive, physical, and psychosocial functions. TBI is an important public health problem worldwide. Annually, 700,000 people are hospitalized after traumatic brain injury (TBI) in Brazil. The patients living with TBI-related disability face numerous challenges in their efforts to return to a full and productive life. Our goal is to describe the most frequent cognitive impairments following TBI and also to discuss the strategies used to handle patients post-TBI. The neuropsychological rehabilitation is an important treatment for patients and families afflicted by TBI. It is important to reinforce that neuropsychological rehabilitation is individuated and personalized – from the results of the tests in the assessment with the neuropsychologist, the professional will determine what are the individual’s deficits (attention, memory, and executive function) and propose strategies of rehabilitation that are specific for that patient, taking into consideration their routine and interests.
