Abstract
Brain is the one of the most important coordinating and controlling system of the body, which regulates different muscular and neuromuscular activities. The current study was undertaken to explore the neuroprotective role of exogenous melatonin and insulin plant extract in diabetic female rats. Administration of melatonin and plant extract to Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rat showed a significant decrease of lipid peroxidation (TBARS) in brain tissue comparable to the control group of rats. In addition, plant extract and melatonin attenuated the decrease in antioxidative enzyme viz. superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), reduced Glutathione (GSH) of brain. Melatonin as well as plant extract showed significant recovery to restore the brain complication induced by hyperglycemic effect caused due to the diabetic condition. Moreover, plant extract comparatively showed best reversal in oxidative stress induced brain damages by down regulating the lipid peroxidation rate and simultaneously upregulating the antioxidative defense system. Hence, it might be inferred that herbal extract is better to combat neuronal damages during diabetic condition. Diabetic rat showed neurodegeneration in turns of decrease number of astrocyte and glial cell however treatment of melatonin and plant extract rescued the brain tissue by restoring the number of astrocyte and glial cell indicating hence neuroprotective effect of synthetic melatonin and plant extract of Costus igneus.
