Abstract

This paper reviews hypothalamic neuronal thermosensitivity. It concentrates on recent studies using extracellular and intracellular recording techniques. It examines three basic types of neurons in the rostral hypothalamus: 1) warm sensitive neurons that integrate local thermal information with peripheral inputs and endogenous factors; 2) cold sensitive neurons, many of which are synaptically driven by warm sensitive neurons; and 3) temperature insensitive neurons that form the mortar used to build local neuronal networks.
