Abstract

Purpose: Pain is a common, disabling and difficult to manage symptom in hand osteoarthritis (OA). Both nociceptive and neuropathic pain mechanisms may play a role in hand OA. These two types of pain may require different treatment. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether neuropathic pain symptoms are present in patients with inflammatory hand OA, to investigate characteristics of those patients and the impact of neuropathic pain symptoms on the physical domain of health related quality of life (HR-QoL), and whether neuropathic pain symptoms are influenced by anti-inflammatory treatment.
