Abstract

The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of neuropathic pain and clinical advice for nurses working with patients who may have neuropathic pain. Information on epidemiology, assessment and management is provided and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE, 2013 ) guidelines on pharmacological management of neuropathic pain are considered. Neuropathic pain is complex and as such requires complex management, which should include both pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies. Before receiving treatment, patients require comprehensive assessment by a physician. However, nurses are well placed to identify patients with possible signs and symptoms of neuropathic pain. It is important for nurses caring for people with possible neuropathic pain to understand the condition and its manifestations, impact on quality of life and management.
