Abstract

The vertebrate nervous system is well protected from exposure to numerous natural and synthetic toxins by the blood–brain and blood–axon barriers. There are, however, a number of regions in the nervous system that are poorly protected. In the central nervous system, these vulnerable regions include the choroid plexus, the neurohypophysis, and the pineal gland. In the peripheral nervous system, the dorsal root ganglia, the autonomic ganglia and the neuromuscular junction are unprotected. This article introduces the numerous natural toxins that target the nervous system, concentrating on the neuromuscular junction. The article concludes with a brief comment on the use of natural toxins as biological tools and the possibility of using natural toxins as prototypes of novel pharmaceuticals.
