Abstract

This self-directed learning module briefly highlights the differential diagnosis for acute weakness in patients with acute respiratory failure requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation. It is part of the chapter on neuromuscular rehabilitation and electrodiagnosis in the Self-Directed Physiatric Education Program for practitioners and trainees in physical medicine and rehabilitation. This article includes a discussion on the role of exericise in the treatment of patients with the late effects of poliomyelitis or with acute inflammatory demyelimating polyradiculoneuropathy.
