Abstract

Dr. David Goldblatt certainly started something, and we should all be grateful. The formal recognition of the human, creative aspect of neurology implied by the existence of this section in the journal is due to his energy and zeal. Neurology is a precise specialty. It is increasingly technical, whether we admit it to ourselves or not. The neurologic examination is overshadowed by diagnostic imaging. The reflex hammer gives way to molecular biology. Old beliefs crumble in the mirror of evidence-based medicine. Quite right, too! But in neurology lies a conundrum. What attracts us to the specialty in the first place? It is, in essence, the brain.
