Neurological sequelae in children born after in-vitro fertilisation: a population-based study. Lancet. 2002;359:461–465. These investigators from Sweden conducted the first long-term, population-based study of the neurological sequelae in children born after in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Using a retrospective cohort design, they compared the frequency of neurological problems between 5,680 children (3,228 singletons, 2,060 twins, 367 triplets and 25 quadruplets) born after IVF with 11,360 matched controls. Both groups were born between 1982–1995. Controls were stratified for sex, year of birth, and birth hospital. The investigators obtained information on neurological problems from a nationwide organization of habilitation centers. Children born after IVF were more likely to need habilitation services than controls (OR 1.7; 95% CI, 1.3–2.2). For singletons, the odds ratio was 1.4 (95% CI, 1.0–2.1). The most frequent diagnosis was cerebral palsy, OR 3.7 (95% CI,... You do not currently have access to this content.
