Abstract
In this edition of Resuscitation, Deakin et al. present their data regarding neurologic status as a predictor of survival in post-arrest patients with electrographic S-T elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) following cardiac arrest. 1 Deakin C.D. Fothergill R. Moore F. Watson L. Whitbread M. Level of consciousness on admission to a Heart Attack Centre is a predictor of survival from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. In comparison, only 30.9% of patients who were unresponsive (Category U) at handoff survived to discharge. Deakin et al. conclude that level of consciousness on admission to the hospital is associated with survival to hospital discharge. Additionally, the authors state that since 30.9% of patients who were unresponsive at hospital admission survived to hospital discharge, their research further supports the use of aggressive critical care in the treatment of these patients post-return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). 1 Deakin C.D.
