Abstract

Neurofibromatosis was first described by von Recklinghausen in 1882. It is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by multiple café au lait spots and nervous system tumors. Often referred to by lay people as “Elephant Man” disease, those diagnosed with neurofibromatosis have visions of being horribly disfigured. However, two thirds of those diagnosed have relatively mild disease.
