Abstract

Recent fluorescence histochemical studies mainly by the research groups of Pearse in London and of Hakanson in Lund have revealed that the cells of the gastro-enteropancreatic (GEP) endocrine system are able to produce monoamines in addition to peptide hormones (Carvalheira et al. , 1968; Pearse and Polak, 1971; Hakanson et al. , 1971; Fujita and Kobayashi, 1973). Administration of L-dopa to animals causes more or less clear fluorescence in almost every cell type of the GEP endocrine system, thus indicating the amine precursor uptake and decarboxylation (APUD) ability of the cells (Pearse, 1969)
