Abstract

This paper introduces an artificial neural network (ANN) approach for phase-comparison carrier protection of EHV transmission line. The design and implementation of the ANN are aimed at real-time high-speed processing that can provide adaptive fault trip decision for phase-comparison carrier protection. The approach is extensively tested using electromagnetic transient program (EMTP) under various electric power system operating conditions. Results show that the speed and selectivity of the proposed approach are satisfactory for EHV transmission line phase-comparison carrier protection.
