Abstract

Visiting a haunted house with friends is a rite of passage among teenagers. Interestingly, researchers find increased arousal and attentiveness to fear responses in response to threat when in the presence of friends (1). Increased fear responses within a group are an example of emotional contagion, considered to be a primitive form of empathy (2). Emotional contagion is defined as the automatic mimicry of the physical and emotional states of another individual. Emotional contagion of both positive and negative valence is used in every social interaction and increases unconscious behavioral synchrony (2).
