Abstract

Ventilation associated pneumonia is an infection of the lower respiratory tract, which occurs in association with mechanical ventilation, and is one of the most common causes of nosocomial infection in the intensive care unit. It is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients, and is associated with prolonged mechanical ventilation, stay in the intensive care unit and hospitalisation. This review discusses the changes in the terms, recently proposed terms by the Center for Disease Control in the United States, on the nomenclature used in the surveillance of pneumonia associated with mechanical ventilation, including the conditions and events associated with ventilation. As far as possible, it was based on information obtained in randomised controlled trials and meta-analyses.
