Abstract

Using the value stream mapping benchmarking technique, waste is identified and then quantitative and qualitative tools are used to help understand the processes in which the waste occurs. The method has been applied across a supply chain within the context of both vertical and horizontal networks. The study involved an automotive component supplier, Trico, and its strategic supply base. Trico, situated in Pontypool, South Wales, is a manufacturer of windscreen wiper blades for all the major European Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM's) and after market. While there are still barriers to be overcome, participating Trico suppliers supported the benchmarking method for the development of both the supply base and improvement activity between customer and supplier.
