Abstract

The source of our seemingly implacable development from humble hunter-gatherer beginnings, to the behemoth that is modern civilisation, has been the complexity and adaptability of human society. Mesopotamia, the cradle of civilisation, was host to a social revolution—writing. The invention of writing transformed the way we communicate—which enabled an unprecedented record of ideas and knowledge.
